What We've Done

On this page we'd like to show you where the PTO budget goes. Every year the budget is set at the first PTO meeting in September. Several items are funded annually, such as field trips, while others are one time expenditures. Our goal is to serve as much of the community as possible while always keeping our educational goals in mind. Check back here throughout the year to see where your contribution is going!

Spring 2016
Bobcat Bowl
The 3rd annual bowling fest was a big hit! Broadus Wood took over most of the lanes at Kegler's with over 100 parents and students taking part. Thanks to Elizabeth Hatcher for all the coordinating that went into making it such a great afternoon for so many people.

Staff & Teacher Appreciation Week
Once again Amy Scherer planned an outstanding week of events for all the staff. This year's theme was "Our Staff are Out of This World!"

Winter 2017
Talent Show
The stars really shone at the Talent Show this year! Once again the teachers started things off with a hilarious skit. Many of the 5th graders helped out by introducing the singers, dancers, gymnasts and comediennes! Thanks to the Girl Scouts for providing refreshments. And special thanks to Sarah Tullo, David, and our chairs Amy Scherer and Krissy Pitts!

This year the dance took place on St. Patrick's Day! The gym was transformed into a festive celebration of green, rainbows, and

Fall 2016

School Supplies
Once again the PTO arranged to pre-purchase all the classroom school supplies, based on what each teacher requested for his or her classroom. We requested that each family pay $20 for these supplies and we had an outstanding response. Thanks to everyone for allowing us to ensure that every classroom has everything our students need for a successful year.

PTO Picnic
Our annual picnic was a great success this year and we didn't even have to postpone it!

Fall Spirit Wear
Thanks to Helen Ascoli for handling this year's autumn sale of school spirit items. This year the PTO also helped to get staff shirts - be sure to tell them how great they look when you see them on Fridays.

Music Carts
The music carts we purchased last year worked out so well that this year we purchased carts for the remaining xylophones. Ms. Flaherty told us these make the classroom more usable and are incredibly helpful during concerts.

Art Books
This year Ms. Jones requested art journals for the 4th and 5th graders. So far this has been very successful and we will probably continue this in the future. We look forward to seeing some of the completed journals in June.

Soccer Goals
Ms. Lindemann asked the PTO about providing a soccer goal for the students to use during recess in the front playground. Soccer amongst the 3-5th grades has become very popular so we were happy to provide two.

After School Clubs
Once again Betsy Greco & Nikki Emmert have organized a wonderful fall schedule of after school clubs.

Muffin Wednesdays
Heather Russell volunteered to make sure that our staff enjoy a special treat every other Wednesday. Thank you also to all the individuals who make this possible!

2nd Grade Field Trip
The PTO paid for the chartered bus that took 2nd Grade on the annual trip to Henricus Park. This is always a great trip that helps to bring home the lessons the students learn about the Powhatan Indians.

Fall Festival/Trick-or-Trunk
This year the festival spread through the school, which was decorated with paintings and art made by the students. We hope they enjoyed seeing their creations throughout the halls. This year there was a maze, a silent auction, and a story reading area in addition to the games in the gym and Trick-or-Trunk. A huge thank you to all the parents and teachers who spent part of the evening helping out!

VA Opera
On October 7th the Virginia Opera visited our school and performed Tales from the Brothers Grimm. The students were able to enjoy some fun interpretations of various fairy tales, all set to opera music.

Box Tops
Melody Henderson once again took care of our fall Box Top drive. This fall the school collected $436.90, which means Melody counted 4,369! We'll have another drive in the spring, so keep saving those little tops!

Election Day Bake Sale
We had an incredibly successful bake sale this year. Thanks to so many parents who donated baked goods and/or their time to greet our Earlysville neighbors, we raised $1900. And of course, special thanks to our Earlysville community who were so generous with their donations.

Book Room
The PTO has allocated $1,500 for the Book Room. Through the Literacy Empowerment Foundation the PTO purchased

Maker Space Items
The Staff has transformed the Spark Lab into a Maker Space. In order to help stock it, we've started collecting donations for all kinds of items. The white box in the front hall will now be used for donations throughout the year. For a list of items, please see this page.

Field Trips!
We sponsored charter buses for the 1st Grade's trip to the Richmond Zoo, the 4th Grade's Trip to Jamestown, and the 5th Grade's trip to Washington DC!

Staff & Teacher Appreciation Week
The staff were treated to a week of special events. Parents generously provided lunches and a breakfast while many students took the time to write special notes. Thank you to Amy Scherer for a week of planning!

Winter 2015

Talent Show
We had a packed room for this year's talent show, but thanks to the amazing organization and practice it all went smoothly. The special performance by the teachers was especially enjoyed!

Box Tops
Thanks to our volunteers and families, we raised x for the school. Ms. Heathcock's class brought in the most and won an afternoon movie. Thanks to all who clip those Box Tops!

Broadus Wood Dance
The Dance of the Decades warmed everyone up on a frosty night.

Bobcat Bowl
The second Bobcat Bowl was even more popular than last year, ensuring a new tradition.

Fall 2015

School Supplies
This year we asked families to contribute $15 a student for the supplies. We had a good response, with $3,700 paid for the supplies, including $415 in donations. The supplies for the school, through October, have amounted to $4,854.

PTO Picnic
This year the annual welcome back picnic was held on September 11th. The picnic was well attended, with many students enjoying the new playground.

Fall Spirit Wear
Kelly Huntley & Helen Ascoli made sure everyone could start out the year showing their spirit with Broadus Wood Logo items.

Music Carts
The PTO purchased five music carts for the large xylophones. This enables the instruments to be moved out of the way in the classroom and to the gymnasium for the class concerts.

Chinese Ink Stones
The PTO supplies sets of ink stones and ink for the art classes.

After School Clubs
Betsy Grect and Nikki Emert helped organize eight after school clubs for the fall.

Muffin Wednesdays
Melanie Veliky is coordinating a large group of volunteers who show our appreciation for the Broadus Wood staff by providing a breakfast treat every other Wednesday.

Box Tops
Melody Henderson and Janice Schuster counted the 7,249 box tops that were turned in by our students! Thank you to everyone who patiently collects those little slips of paper and congratulations to Ms. Taryn Johnson's class for collecting the most this time.

Election Day Bake Sale
Amy Carlson led the Bake Sale this year. Despite it being a low turnout, the Bake Sale raised over $1200! Thank you to all the bakers and the sellers for making this such a successful year.

Magic of Math Assembly
On November 9th, we were visited by Christian and the Magic of Math. He gave a magic show presentation in which he tried to emphasize how math plays an important role in things all around us, including magic tricks. His tricks included the Chinese rings, Human Calculator, a matching game students can figure out at home, and a levitating table!

Book Room
The PTO has allocated $1,500 for the Book Room. This consists of sets of books aimed at particular reading levels.

Maker Space Items
The PTO allocated $1,000 toward maker space/STEM items such as KEVA wooden building blocks, Arduino kits, electronic kits, and circuit supplies.

VA Opera
On November 13th the Virginia Opera program visited the school and presented "Trickster Trilogy."

Movie Nights!
With the new gym floor, Skate Nights could no longer be held. The PTO decided to instead host several movie nights. The first Movie Night was November 13th and the second was December 12th. The portable screens work very well, but we learned that the sound was not sufficient if they are used in the gym. The popcorn has been a big hit, too!
